“Can you give that back, please?”

The city of Arles (I’ve been - it’s stunning!) has kindly asked the French Culture Minister Roselyne Bachelot and the Louvre to return a Venus of Arles statue it gifted to King Louis XIV back in 1683.

 

The statue is a Roman copy of a Greek original which was originally displayed at the Roman Theater of Arles as early as 1651. It then moved to the town hall before it was donated to the King by the town, where it was displayed at the Palace of Versailles.

 

From there it was moved to the Louvre, where it still rests today.

 

Some 226 years later, will the sculpture return to its original home in Provence? Time will tell.
