The History of the Cannes Film Festival
On the day of the Awards ceremony, the jury was unanimous. An American film had captured their hearts, but under pressure from Hitler the Nazi propaganda film Olympia by Leni Riefenstahl and the Italian film Luciano Serra, Pilot by Goffredo Alessandrini reaped the ultimate accolade, named the Mussolini Cup.
The decision provoked outrage among the members representing democratic countries and France, the United States and Great Britain left the Mostra, vowing not to return.
During his train journey back to France, Philippe Erlanger, thought of setting up an event to replace the Mostra and offer the world a festival that was free of pressure and constraints. On his return, he contacted the authorities.

There was no time to waste – a rival French festival was required before the next Venice competition came around.

"Barring the afternoon snack of school children, it’s true: Snacking between meals isn’t really a thing in France. Unless, of course, you swap in the word snack for “apéro.” Pausing for a drink and small bite during apéritif hour is sacred across France — and easily translates to your own backyard."

In the Footsteps of Johnny Hallyday (the French Elvis)
"Born Jean-Philippe Smet, on June 15, 1943, in Paris’s 9th arrondissement, he had little interaction with his parents. His Belgian father, Léon Smet, was a hard-drinking nightclub performer who abandoned the family, while his French mother, Huguette Clerc, was often absent, pursuing her modelling career. The youngster was brought up by his aunt instead."
"Johnny’s stage name came courtesy of a cousin’s American husband, singer Lee Halliday, who gave him an early, invaluable schooling in showbiz, taking on a paternal role of sorts. It was Hallyday’s record company that inadvertently misspelt his last name with a ‘y’. But it stuck."
